Risk Assessment
One evening: 2 hours
Review the steps a prudent master should take to ensure that his or her vessel is being operated in the safest possible manner.
Course Overview
The idea of risk assessment comes from the British Sea Fish Authority which developed a unique way to regulate the fishing vessels wihtough becoming known as safety police. Conversely, the US Coast Guard mandates a broad range of equipment be onboard a vessel which may or may not be applicable to that vessel.
Under the risk assessment program, the master reviews the vessel and rates anything that could potentially cause an accident by answering, "How likely is an accident to occur and if the accident does occur, how disastrous could the results be?"
A participant in this program will leave with a sense of how to spot the danger points on his or her vessel as well as ideas on how to mitigate the risk.
